FAQs

On this page you can find answers to a number of questions asked by Categories Game Maker users.

Question: I am a foreign language teacher and I need to add special characters to the text in my questions. How can I do this?

In order to create tests in a foreign language, Windows must be set to that language. Then anything that you type in Categories will use that language's symbols. You can set up Windows XP to do this as follows:

Start / Control Panel / Date, Time, Language... / Add Other Languages / Languages / Details / Add / Choose Language from Dropdown List / OK / OK. Right click on the Windows Taskbar (often at the bottom of the screen) and select Toolbars and make sure Language Bar is checked. At the right side of the toolbar, a EN box should appear. Click on the EN box and select the language that you would like to use. Each language may have different keystrokes for special letters or characters. For example, in Traditional Spanish, the shift + (both keys struck at the same time) gives an upside question mark. With a little experimentation, you can quickly map out the special letters that you need.

Question: What are some of the copyright issues involved in using multimedia elements from the Internet.

We have found that there are many sites that make their graphics (or animations, movies, or sounds) freely available, especially for use in education. If they do not state that on the web site, you can e-mail the webmaster or author and ask permission to use the multimedia elements in your game. Most sites will allow their use as long as they stay in the classroom. A few sites may require you to include a notice, giving credit to the author or source of the materials. There are many Internet sites with more specific information on copyright issues. For example, here is a site with extensive information on Copyright issues and the definition of fair use: http://www.copyright.iupui.edu/fairuse.htm

Question: How can I add spoken words to my questions?

The Categories Game Maker includes a link to the Windows Sound Recorder, which is simple to use, but not all that powerful. You will need to have a microphone hooked into the sound card on your computer. After starting the Windows Sound Recorder, click on the record button and start talking. When you are done, click on the stop button. You can click on the play button to listen to your recording. When you are finished, click on the File menu and save the sound as a wav file into your Categories game folder. A much more powerful and free sound program called Audacity can be downloaded from the Internet at:
http://audacity.sourceforge.net/download/

Question: Sometimes when I open the File Finder, Multiple Choice Question Maker, or other utilities, the path does not show up. What is the problem?

These utilities are run as seperate programs and the path is sent from the Categories Game Maker to the utility when the utility is opened. Some spyware programs see this activity as possible spyware activity and stop it. Try disabling your spyware program while you are using the utilities and turn it back on when you are done. Or you can add the path by clicking on the Set Game Path Button that is available in each of these utility programs.
