Multimedia Science – FREE Science & Game Making Software & Materials

The company Multimedia Science is no longer selling its science software and game making software.  However, the company is allowing anyone to use these materials free of charge. Feel free to share them with other teachers.

The Word file can be downloaded from:

http://www.darngoodsolutions.com/mmsapps/MMSMaterialsFree.docx

All of the files have been placed in compressed Zip files.  Pretty much all of these materials have instructor’s notes, objectives, and answer keys.  Some of the Zip files contain a single PC .exe file, which is an install file.  When run, the .exe file will install the software and associated documents on your computer.  The instructor’s notes will have more information on how to install, set up, and use the materials.

All of these materials have been tested for computer viruses.  Some virus checkers will flag the files as being infected because they are not “popular” files.  They are safe for you to use.

How Multimedia Science Began – The Molecule Doesn’t Stop Here

Science Teaching & Technology by Multimedia Science
How Multimedia Science Began

The Molecule Doesn’t Stop Here

In 1994 a new piece of software came out called Klik & Play.  It was inexpensive and was designed to allow the creation of software games.  This game creation tool was touted as making it extremely easy to create simple games without writing a single line of code. I bought a copy out of curiosity and began to make my first game.  Klik & Play came with all sorts of animated sprites and before I know it I had created a crude but workable molecular simulator.  This led to one of my first science applications, the Gas Laws Lab simulation software.  This software is available at:

Gas Laws Lab at Teachers Pay Teachers  or  Gas Laws Lab at TES

3

Over the next 20 plus years, I continued to create or “author” physics, chemistry, and teacher tools software and use this software with my classes both in the classroom and in computer labs.  I will be writing future articles talking about how to use the software and why it is effective in teaching and motivating students.  During my 30 years in teaching I have also developed many materials and explored the use of many types of technology for use in the classroom.

These 100 plus materials and software can be found at:

Teachers Pay Teachers  or  TES

The authoring software that started as Klik & Play has gone through many updates going from Klik & Play to Click & Create to Multimedia Fusion 1.0 to Multimedia Fusion 1.5 to Multimedia Fusion 2.0 to the present Clickteam Fusion 2.5.  You can get a free copy of Clickteam Fusion 2.5

2You can build your own molecular simulator by using the free copy and watching this You Tube tutorial.

Tutorial 1: This video shows how to use the authoring software Clickteam Fusion (formally known as Multimedia Fusion) to create a molecular simulator.  Clickteam fusion is a powerful tool for creating software applications including simulations and games.  The molecular simulator is a number of “molecules” bouncing around in a container where the temperature can be changed and the pressure heard when the molecules hit the sides of the container.  The tutorial is conducted using the free download version of Clickteam Fusion.  The video also shows what several finished pieces of software based on the molecular simulator and designed for teaching high school chemistry look like.

Sound Advice For The Classroom Environment

[like]

How important is the sound environment in our classrooms?  Turns out its a lot more important than we think. Think about working in an office without walls or even a cubicle and the distractions of voices, sneezing, tapping, humming equipment and so on.  This article talks about the details and magnitude of the  problem and how to solve it.

Teacher Terminator – Will a Robot Take Your Job?

[like]

Can you imagine a classroom where a robot or robots roam the classroom helping students with their math, their English, or their handwriting?  Well, as you know, robots have invaded a number of other industries, such as automobile manufacturing. They have brought tremendous increases in productivity but also losses in jobs.

Robots have started to be used inside of classrooms around the world.  So what are the reasons robots might be used in the classroom.

  •  The upcoming generation seems to be in love with technology.
  • Shy students might be more willing to interact and participate with a robot.
  • Robots don’t get tired and have unlimited patience.

Swiss researchers have built a humanoid like robot which teaches young students about 7 years old handwriting.  The learning is accomplished by having the students teach the robot to write and as the robot improves, the students do as well.

Robots might be an answer to the challenge of educating autistic children, who are uncomfortable in the presence of human teachers.  A school in England has found that autistic students enjoy working with teaching robots.

Of course, creating an effective teaching robot is not an easy task.  It seems that artificial intelligence is always just around the corner.  But they are trying in South Korea, where a robot uses AI software including motion tracking and speech recognition to teach English.  There is an initiative there to place a robot in every kindergarten program.

In the US, a robot teaches foreign languages to preschoolers.

It was found that young girls did not find robots with visible gears, wheels, and wires that interesting.  But when made with rounded curves and more creative shapes, the girls thought differently.

But robots, so far, are used mostly for teaching very simple and repetitive material, such as vocabulary. For the time being, educators’ jobs should be safe.  But the clock is ticking and the teacher terminator may be on the horizon.

Would you like to guess when this is going to happen?  Or will computer based and Internet based learning put both teachers and the robots out of business?

Lesson Flows by Common Sense Graphite

[like]

The premise behind Lesson Flows is to help teachers combine inspiring teaching practices with great digital tools. For each part of the lesson plan you will be able to curate and add web tools that can best meet its objectives.lesson flow

Here is an example of a Lesson Flow created by a digital learning specialist. Follow the link above for more examples of Lesson Flows created by other teachers.

While the idea seems great, I was not very successful in creating a sample Lesson Flow.  After filling in the requisite parts, a digital tool was suggested.  But I did not find any way to access that digital tool.  I’m still not sure if I am supposed to supply the tool or it is somehow available in the process.

If anyone makes more progress than I did, please share.

Changing The “Game” In Education

[like]

Can using games in education dramatically increase student motivation over the use of lectures and videos?  Can gaming education increase student achievement over 100%?

Gabe Zickermann thinks so and has a number of examples to back up his assertions.   Try some games in your classroom and report back the results.
